Disaster Relief Activated
The Queensland Government has activated disaster relief funding for flooded areas in north west Queensland, after monsoonal rain lashed the region over the weekend.
The joint State and Commonwealth-funded Natural Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangements (NDRRA) has been initiated for Cloncurry, McKinlay and Burke local government areas.
Acting Emergency Services Minister Andrew Fraser said an estimated $4 million worth of damage had been caused to public infrastructure.
“The Department has activated NDRRA assistance for the restoration of essential public assets, primarily roads, and counter-disaster costs incurred by local councils,” he said.
“The estimated damage is $2 million in the McKinlay region, and $1 million in both Cloncurry and Burke local government areas.”
Member for Mt Isa Betty Kiernan said that if any residents did suffer personal hardship as a result of the storms and associated flooding, they could apply to the Department of Communities for assistance, on 1800 173 349.
“Personal hardship grants of $165 per person and up to $765 per family may be available for directly impacted residents who have been unable to recover via their own means,” she said.
Ms Kiernan said local SES groups had responded to several calls for help.
“SES volunteers have been called to a number of homes to assist with temporary repairs for leaking roofs,” she said.
“I thank all those volunteers who have given up their time to help residents in the community.’’
