Minister for Communities, Disability Services, ATSIP, Multicultural Affairs, Seniors and Youth
The Honourable Lindy Nelson-Carr
Crucial domestic and family violence support available during holidays
Communities Minister Lindy Nelson-Carr said the summer holidays can be one of the busiest times for domestic violence support services.
Ms Nelson-Carr said the Bligh Government funds DVConnect to operate three counselling lines which offer support, information and referrals to other services.
“I encourage anyone experiencing abuse to contact the DVConnect helplines for immediate advice and assistance,” she said.
“The 24-hour Womensline enables women to discuss their needs and, where necessary, obtain safe accommodation for themselves and their children.
“The Mensline helps men change their behaviour and also offers assistance to those experiencing relationship problems or abuse themselves.
“A Serviceline is also available during the week to assist counsellors and Police provide the most appropriate assistance to people affected by domestic and family violence.”
From October 2007 to September 2008, more than 53,000 calls had been made to the helplines.
Ms Nelson-Carr said the significant number of calls to DVConnect’s helplines highlighted the increasing community awareness of domestic and family violence as an issue.
”Additional staff will also be assigned throughout the holiday period to help Queenslanders in need,” said the Minister.
“I urge any Queenslander who needs help to take the first step and make the call.
“I would also ask anyone who sees abuse to contact the Police.
“Domestic and family violence are unacceptable and we, as a community, must take a stand if we are to put a stop to the cycle of abuse.”
The Department of Communities provided more than $1.3 million in 2008-09 for the DVConnect freecall services.
Queenslanders in need of support should call the Womensline on 1800 551 800 or Mensline on 1800 600 636.
