Funding for wet season programs

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Partnerships Minister Lindy Nelson-Carr has announced $84,234 in funding for family diversionary activities in Palm Island, Mornington Island and Doomadgee.

“These wet season programs are designed to give residents and families some fun activities to get involved with until transport and communications get back to normal,” she said.

Ms Nelson-Carr said the funding has gone to the Police Citizens Youth Clubs on Palm Island ($20,000) and Mornington Island ($32,117), while the Doomadgee Aboriginal Shire Council would receive $32,117.

“This assistance will enable these community organisations to build on existing programs and get kids out and about.”

“The organisations will run a range of community activities and recreational programs designed to meet the interests of young people and their families.”

On Palm Island, the PCYC is organisation recreational programs which include a big basketball showdown, along with some boxing sessions.

On Mornington Island and in Doomadgee, the activities program includes fishing, gardening, arts, crafts and movie nights as well as sports such as softball, basketball, rugby and touch football.
