New Chair for Queensland Museum Board

Arts Minister Rod Welford has announced Professor Peter Swannell AM as the new Chair of the Queensland Museum Board.

“Professor Swannell was the Vice-Chancellor and President of the University of Southern Queensland and is the current Director of the Heritage Building Society,” Mr Welford said.
“He is also a recognised leader in the arts, serving as Chairman of Empire Theatres Pty Ltd and a former Director of the Queensland Orchestra.”

Professor Swannell said he was excited to become Chair at a time when Queensland Museum was exploring new exhibition possibilities, improved accessibility to the state collection for all Queenslanders and a ground-breaking research program.

“The Queensland Museum is an important icon, as a major custodian of the state’s natural and cultural heritage and the generator of significant scientific research,” Professor Swannell said.

“It is a unique organisation that brings together cutting-edge research, education, creative displays and programs that reach across all of Queensland. I am very proud to now be a part of the museum team.”

Queensland Museum Chief Executive Officer Dr Ian Galloway paid tribute to former Chair Anne Jones who had successfully guided the museum since 2002.

“I look forward to the challenges ahead and to delivering a revitalised Queensland Museum to audiences with the support of such a diverse and dynamic Board,” Dr Galloway said.

Five new Queensland Museum Board members will join Professor Swannell and current members Mr Trevor Robinson, Dr Barbara Piscitelli AM, Mr Peter Duffy, Ms Carolyn Mason, and The Hon Dr David Hamill to drive the future vision of the Museum.

The new members are Mr Stephen Copplin, an Adjunct Professor in the School of Business and School of Electrical Engineering at the University of Queensland and business coach for Shirlaws; Ms Marina Vit, Director Sales and Marketing at Honeycombe Property Group; Dr Geoff Ginn, Lecturer in History and Co-Director of the Centre for Applied History & Heritage Studies at the University of Queensland; and Ms Yassmin Abdel Magied, founder and President of international not-for-profit organisation, Youth without Borders and Engineering student at the University of Queensland.
