Minister for Mines and Energy
The Honourable Geoff Wilson

Powerful milestone reached

The first stage of a $500 million project to reinforce the electricity network between Central and North Queensland has been completed, Mines and Energy Minister Geoff Wilson said today.

“The Bligh Government is planning for the future and delivering for Queensland,”
Mr Wilson said.

“Demand for electricity is booming and is expected to continue into the future.

“Our government’s keeping one step ahead of the game and planning for future growth. This new Powerlink line between Broadsound and Nebo is already bringing benefits to North Queensland and has increased the region’s transmission capacity by nearly 20 per cent.”

The first stage of Powerlink’s transmission upgrade project has also seen a $55 million upgrade to Strathmore Substation.

Member for Townsville Mike Reynolds said stages two and three of the project will see the new transmission line extended further north to Strathmore and on to Ross, near Townsville.

“In terms of distance, this three-stage project is the biggest Powerlink has ever undertaken,” Mr Reynolds said.

“It’ll see more than 500km of powerlines being installed between Broadsound and Townsville as well as substation works to connect the new powerlines.”

Mr Reynolds said the project was important for the people of Central and North Queensland and it was rewarding to see years of planning paying off.

“While the LNP fumbles around looking for policies, the Bligh Government is getting on with the job and delivering for Queensland,” Mr Reynolds said.
