Sunshine Coast switches on a $3 million power upgrade

Power supply on the Sunshine Coast has received a boost after ENERGEX flicked the switch on its $3 million upgrade to the local electricity network, Mines and Energy Minister Geoff Wilson said today.

Around 10,000 homes and businesses stretching from Mooloolaba to Forest Glen will benefit from the upgrade at ENERGEX’s Mooloolaba substation.

The upgrade included the installation of a second transformer, effectively doubling the electricity capacity at the substation.

“The Sunshine Coast is one of the fastest growing areas in South East Queensland, with around 8,000 additional homes and businesses connecting to the network each year,” Mr Wilson said.

“This will see electricity use in the region rise by around 40 per cent over the next six years.”

Mr Wilson said ENERGEX has invested more than $180 million in the Sunshine Coast region over the past three years.

“The Bligh Government is building tomorrow’s Queensland and investing around $4 billion in South East Queensland’s electricity network – that’s around $3 million a day,” Mr Wilson said.

“We are planning for the future and getting on with the job.”

Mr Wilson said the last time the Liberals and Nationals were in power they left the state in darkness for four whole days.

“The record of the Liberals and Nationals speaks for itself,” Mr Wilson said.

“They may have changed their name to the LNP, but everything else about them remains the same.

“Whilst the LNP continues to struggle with infighting and backstabbing, the Bligh Government is planning for the future and delivering for Queensland.”
