Funding helps vulnerable Mackay women and children
Communities Minister Lindy Nelson-Carr has announced funding of $1.7 million for the Mackay and Region Domestic Violence Resource Service to help women and children affected by domestic and family violence.
The funding, over three years, will allow the service to continue to provide a range of domestic violence prevention services.
“Women and children living in the Mackay region will be offered help including counselling and support to help deal with the effects of domestic and family violence,” Ms Nelson- Carr said.
“Assistance will also be given to women applying for a domestic violence protection order in the Magistrates Court.
Ms Nelson-Carr said another group, the Mackay Women’s Centre, will also receive funding of more than $90,000 over three years to offer continued support to women who are struggling with pregnancy in difficult circumstances.
"If women are healthy throughout their pregnancy and receive the support they need, then their children will have the best possible start to life," she said.
“Violence and abuse in the home is completely unacceptable,” Ms Nelson-Carr said.
Local State Member for Mackay Tim Mulherin welcomed the funding for both organisations.
“Domestic and family violence can affect people for their entire lives. It is important to put services in place to give vulnerable people a place to turn to in times of need,” Mr Mulherin said.
“The ongoing support to these organisations will provide those services and shows the Bligh Governments commitment to protecting those most at risk in our communities.
“Communities need to take a strong stand against domestic and family violence to send a clear message that this kind of destructive behaviour is not on, ever,” he said.
Ms Nelson-Carr said a new whole-of-government domestic and family violence prevention strategy was being developed to fill gaps in services and improve the support available to clients across the State.
“This part of the Bligh Governments Toward Q2: Tomorrow’s Queensland vision in action creating a fairer, healthier and stronger Queensland now and into the future.”
