On-line network to support Downs community workers

Communities and Disability Services Minister Lindy Nelson-Carr announced a grant of $17,500 would allow Toowoomba’s Advocacy and Support Centre to develop an online ‘virtual’ community to assist community workers in the Darling Downs region.

“The online ‘virtual’ community will have information and support services tailored to the needs of community workers,” Ms Nelson-Carr said.

“So many community workers face pressure and stress like other workers and
we need to support them in their demanding role of assisting clients with often complex and challenging requirements.

State Member for Toowoomba North Kerry Shine welcomed the funding for the Advocacy and Support Centre and said it was an example of an organisation which was seeking innovative ways to support the community.

“The online service will adopt a strong, social networking theme to encourage the sharing of content regarding work related stress,” Mr Shine said.

“This support network will help alleviate the emotional and mental pressures that can adversely affect the ability of community workers to provide the best possible service.

“Assisting non-government organisations like the Advocacy and Support Centre to be as strong as possible means they can continue their essential work,” he said.

“We want them in a position where they can focus on what they do best: applying local knowledge to find local solutions to local issues.”

Ms Nelson-Carr said seven rural community organisations across the state will share Building Rural Links funding of more than $337,000 for projects that build partnerships within the community sector and strengthen local services.

“The Building Rural Links initiative is contributing to the Queensland Government’s Toward Q2: Tomorrow’s Queensland vision to create safe, caring communities,” Ms Nelson-Carr said.

“It’s also part of the Blueprint for the Bush commitment to building a sustainable, liveable and prosperous rural Queensland.

“Other successful grant applicants included organisations with programs in areas such as Indigenous issues, youth services, drug and alcohol abuse, and homelessness.”
