Communities and Disability Services Minister Lindy Nelson-Carr announced a grant of $75,000 would allow the Carpenteria Shire Council to run a innovative program aimed at developing good relations between local teens and the community.

The Normanton Ropes program will challenge regional teenagers to explore their abilities through challenging physical exercises.

“The program targets young people between 12 and 18 years of age who have some criminal history or anti-social behaviour patterns,” Ms Nelson-Carr said.

“It encourages them to take risks in a secure environment rather than breaking the law.

"The Normanton Ropes course won’t be easy; it will consist of a course of short and low ropes, and requires trust and teamwork to complete the physical challenges.”

The ropes program, will be facilitated by police, a youth support officer and local Elders.

"It gives young people an opportunity to have positive interactions with police and their community and encourages them to explore their own physical and mental abilities,” she said.

“Similar courses have been set up with extremely positive results in New South Wales towns.”

Ms Nelson-Carr said seven rural organisations will share funding of more than $337,000 under the Building Rural Links initiative for projects that build partnerships within the community sector and strengthen local services.

“The Building Rural Links initiative is contributing to the Queensland Government’s Toward Q2: Tomorrow’s Queensland vision to create safe, caring communities,” Ms Nelson-Carr said.

“It’s also part of the Blueprint for the Bush commitment to building a sustainable, liveable and prosperous rural Queensland.
