Relief at hand for Queenslanders in need
Communities Minister Lindy Nelson-Carr has announced $1.42 million in emergency assistance for some 90 organisations across the State to help some our most needy Queenslanders over the Christmas-New Year period.
“The assistance will go towards food vouchers, food parcels, cash and support for families and individuals experiencing financial crisis,” Ms Nelson-Carr said.
“The 90 organisations dot the State, including the Salvation Army, St Vincent de Paul, Centacare, church and community groups, and local councils, operating some 140 community services,” she said.
“We know there are Queensland families doing it tough, so every bit of help we can give will make a difference to people in our communities who are struggling. Christmas can be a really difficult time for families experiencing financial hardship and these wonderful organisations are there to help those who are most in need.”
The emergency assistance is usually provided in the form of cash or vouchers for essential items such as food, clothing, medicine, transport and personal items, or to help pay bills such as electricity, gas or rent.
Ms Nelson-Carr said there are many community-based groups providing support and assistance to thousands of Queenslanders every year.
“These organisations play an important role in helping distribute emergency government funding, as well as extending a caring hand at times when it’s needed most.”
Funded organisations also provide referrals to community services which can provide longer term support.
“The Bligh Government is committed to helping people in times of need. We have allocated an additional $3 million for financial counselling, and the extra emergency grants will alleviate some of the pressure on families.”
