Land designated for detention centre expansion

Communities Minister Lindy Nelson-Carr today announced land adjacent to the Cleveland Youth Detention Centre (CYDC) would be designated “Community Infrastructure” to enable expansion work to get underway.

”The Department of Communities will buy 5.8 hectares of land neighbouring the centre to create an additional 48 detention centre places, taking the centre’s total capacity to 96 when completed,” she said.

“Work will start in January 2009, with the project to be completed in early 2012.”

Along with more staff to be employed at the growing centre, the Minister said the construction phase would create additional job opportunities for the region.

The next step will be to tender for a managing contractor, with planning and design to have as minimal an impact on the local community as possible.”

A feasibility study was commissioned into site options in Townsville and Cairns which determined expanding Cleveland was the best option.

“This project means jobs for the region, not only during the construction phase over the next three years but also at the expanded centre which will require more staff.”

The day-to-day operations of the centre will not be affected during construction on the adjacent land.

Treasurer Andrew Fraser announced $170 million in capital funding for the project earlier this month.
