Communities Minister Lindy Nelson-Carr has given the green light to a new Early Childhood Education and Care Centre (ECEC) at the former Beenleigh pre-school site.

Ms Nelson-Carr said the centre would be located on James Street, Beenleigh, with refurbishment to get underway in March and the service to be open from mid-late 2009.

“ECEC centres provide a licensed child care service with a range of location-specific child and family services to meet the needs of the local community, particularly families with children up to the age of 8 years,” Ms Nelson-Carr said.

“The early years of a child’s life, from birth to eight years of age, are a critical time when families may need support and services that integrate early childhood education, care, health and parenting advice,” she said.

Local State Member for Waterford Evan Moorhead has welcomed the announcement.

Mr Moorhead said the Beenleigh centre would be operated by the Wesley Mission and provide a limited hours care service for up to 21 children.

“This service will provide flexible care to support parents who need part time or occasional care for their children,” he said.

“It will also include a family support hub providing a range of services such as young parents groups, parenting classes, support services for grandparents who are the primary carers, and playgroups.

“Other services may also be delivered on site, including visiting professionals and specialists.”

The site is well-positioned within the Beenleigh central area, with easy access to public transport, local schools and other services.

“The close proximity to the primary school will enable young children to quickly familiarise themselves with the environment, as well as assist parents who have more than one child by providing a single drop off point,” Mr Moorhead said.

The existing pre-school building will be remodelled, and a new 10-space car park will be created at the rear of the site to provide access from Elizabeth Street.
