The Honourable Geoff Wilson

Switchyard ready for innovative power station

Ergon Energy has completed work on a $37 million switchyard in readiness for Australia’s first low emission coal seam gas-fired power station.

The switchyard at Columboola, near Miles, has been hailed by industry experts for setting a benchmark for international best practice and will allow electricity generated at Condamine Power Station to be fed into the electricity grid.

Minister for Mines and Energy Geoff Wilson said the new switchyard will allow Queenslanders to power their homes with clean, low emission energy.

“The Bligh Government is looking over the horizon and working to deliver a cleaner, greener energy future for Queensland,” Mr Wilson said.

“Demand for energy is booming throughout the state and this will continue into the future.

“Our Government is meeting the challenge head on and keeping one step ahead of the game by investing in clean energy infrastructure.

“That’s what TowardQ2 is all about – smart, clean energy solutions for Queensland.

Mr Wilson said the last time the Nationals and Liberals were in government they left the state in darkness for four whole days.

“The LNP doesn’t have a plan for Queensland’s future. While they continue to argue amongst themselves and fumble around for ideas the Bligh Government is getting on with the job of delivering for Queensland.”

Mr Wilson said coal seam gas has very small amounts of both nitrogen and carbon dioxide making it cleaner than natural gas.

The new 140 megawatt power station is expected to be up and running by March 2009.

Minister Wilson said the power station would be fuelled by coal seam gas produced at Queensland Gas Company’s gas fields in the Surat Basin.
