Funding helps vulnerable women and children in South-West Queensland

Communities Minister Lindy Nelson-Carr has announced funding of almost $750,000 for the Roma Regional Council to continue addressing domestic and family violence in South West Queensland.

Ms Nelson-Carr said the council had operated the regional domestic violence service for more than 10 years and had assisted 168 people from January to June this year.

“Regional women and children will continue to receive help including counselling and support to help deal with the effects of domestic and family violence,” she said.

“Assistance will also be given to women applying for a domestic violence protection order in the Magistrates Court, and to child witnesses.

“Domestic and family violence can affect people for their entire lives. It is important to put services in place to give vulnerable people a place to turn to in times of need.

“The Roma service will also run prevention and awareness programs, with a focus on male perpetrators of violence.”

“Violence and abuse in the home is completely unacceptable,” Ms Nelson-Carr said.

“Communities need to take a strong stand against domestic and family violence to send a clear message that this kind of destructive behaviour is not on, ever.”

Ms Nelson-Carr said a new whole-of-government domestic and family violence prevention strategy was being developed to fill gaps in services and improve the support available to clients across the State.

“The Toward Q2: Tomorrow’s Queensland vision is focused on taking action now for a fairer and stronger Queensland, and providing intervention and prevention programs like domestic violence prevention services will help us achieve our ambitious goals.”
