Minister for Emergency Services
The Honourable Neil Roberts

EMBARGOED UNTIL MIDNIGHT: New fire station for thriving fishing town

Residents of Tin Can Bay and the surrounding area will benefit from a new state of the art auxiliary fire station, opening today.

The $700,000 facility is one of three new and 11 redeveloped or replacement fire and rescue stations being built to service the growing needs of South-East Queensland.

Emergency Services Minister Neil Roberts said the new Tin Can Bay auxiliary fire station will provide significant benefits to the local community.

“This facility is well located to best serve the expanding communities of Tin Can Bay and Cooloola Village,” he said.

“With pristine beaches and a thriving fishing industry, more and more people are moving to this area and it is important that emergency services in the area reflect the increasing demands of the area.”

Minister Roberts also took the opportunity to commend the 10 auxiliary firefighters on their role in protecting life and property in the community.

“The Tin Can Bay fire and rescue crew responded to 48 incidents in the area last year,” he said.

“The commitment and dedication of these firefighters to protect and assist their community has been demonstrated time and time again and I thank each of them for their efforts in helping fellow Queenslanders.

“Many of these firefighters have other occupations which they are called away from to attend to these incidents, often at inconvenient times, and I would also like to thank the employers and families of these firefighters for their understanding and support.”

Mr Roberts said the Bligh Government is committed to giving firefighters the best resources to do their job.
