Minister for Main Roads and Local Government
The Honourable Warren Pitt
Main Roads has delivered an early Christmas present to Moggill Road motorists today with the opening of two new additional lanes between Kilkivan Avenue and Pullenvale Road, Main Roads Minister Warren Pitt said today.
Mr Pitt said construction crews had worked tirelessly after taking control of the $34 million project in June to ensure the new lanes would be open to traffic during the busy holiday period.
“This is a great achievement by the work crews; to have this project to the stage of being able to open the new lanes for Christmas, despite recent wet weather,” Mr Pitt said.
“The upgrade offers a range of benefits for motorists and the local community, including increased safety and road capacity, as well as improved traffic flow and pedestrian access.
“Motorists will now benefit from the dedicated two lanes in either direction between Kilkivan Avenue and Pullenvale Road, which will increase traffic flow and reduce traffic congestion and travel times.”
Mr Pitt said the project also included the duplication of the Moggill Creek Bridge and the signalisation of intersections with pedestrian crossings at Pullenvale Road, Kilkivan Avenue (south) and Rafting Ground Road.
Work on the upgrade project was delayed in May 2008 when the original contractor for the project appointed an administrator.
Main Roads took on the project management of the works in June using existing sub-contractors to ensure the work was completed to a high standard and to help reduce impacts on motorists.
“On behalf of Main Roads, I would like to thank the local community and motorists for their ongoing patience and understanding while we completed these new lanes," Mr Pitt said.
“Main Roads is committed to improving conditions on Moggill Road for motorists and pedestrians.
“We now look forward to completing the final landscaping and some asphalt surfacing works for the community by early next year.”
