Minister for Main Roads and Local Government
The Honourable Warren Pitt
Wide bay-Burnett region to get more than $2m in road and drainage funding
Six councils in the Wide Bay-Burnett region have received a total of $2,010,718 in Bligh Government funding this month to help with the costs of improving local road networks and drainage systems.
Local Government Minister Warren Pitt said the Road and Drainage Grants Program funding demonstrated the Bligh Government’s commitment to ensuring councils had the proper resources to deliver the best possible services to ratepayers.
“Road infrastructure is a vital component of Queensland’s economic prosperity and is the lifeblood of many small and regional communities,” Mr Pitt said.
“These annual grants will help Queensland councils with the capital works costs associated with the construction of roads and urban storm water drainage.”
Member for Hervey Bay Andrew McNamara said the funding would provide timely assistance to regional councils in the countdown to Christmas and help them deliver higher quality local infrastructure to ratepayers in the region.
“The conditions on the funding are very flexible, providing councils with the autonomy to determine their own priorities and spending arrangements,” Mr McNamara said.
The regional funding distribution is:
• Bundaberg Regional Council $546,639
• Cherbourg Aboriginal Shire Council $16,178
• Fraser Coast Regional Council $435,164
• Gympie Regional Council $376,626
• North Burnett Regional Council $323,365
• South Burnett Regional Council $312,746
Mr Pitt said in the five years from 2006–07, the State Government would provide $125 million to councils under the Road and Drainage Grants Program.
“The Bligh Government will continue to support councils across the state to provide all Queenslanders with strong, sustainable and prosperous communities.”
