North Qld receives $1.2m in road and drainage funding
Five councils in north Queensland have received a total of $1,259,304 in Bligh Government funding this month to help with the costs of improving local road networks and drainage systems.
Local Government Minister Warren Pitt said the Road and Drainage Grants Program funding demonstrated the Bligh Government’s commitment to ensuring councils had the proper resources to deliver the best possible services to ratepayers.
“Road infrastructure is a vital component of Queensland’s economic prosperity and is the lifeblood of many small and regional communities,” Mr Pitt said.
“These annual grants will help Queensland councils with the capital works costs associated with the construction of roads and urban storm water drainage.”
Member for Townsville Mike Reynolds said the funding would help ensure both access to and improve safety for the council’s extensive road network.
“Through this funding, the Bligh Government will assist councils deliver higher quality local infrastructure to ratepayers across the state,” Mr Reynolds said.
“The conditions on the funding are very flexible, providing councils with the autonomy to determine their own priorities and spending arrangements.”
Mr Reynolds said in the five years from 2006–07, the State Government would provide $125 million to councils under the Road and Drainage Grants Program.
“The full payment of this year’s funding to councils this month provides timely assistance to council coffers in the countdown to Christmas,” he said.
The regional funding distribution is:
• Burdekin Shire Council $212,346
• Charters Towers Regional Council $239,739
• Hinchinbrook Shire Council $136,875
• Palm Island Aboriginal Shire Council $16,178
• Townsville City Council $654,166
