Minister for Mines and Energy
The Honourable Geoff Wilson
Economic crisis triggers job losses
Mines and Energy Minister Geoff Wilson said the worst global economic crisis since the Great Depression has triggered job losses in the Queensland mining industry.
“What we’re seeing here is the human face of the global economic crisis and the harsh reality that we are indeed facing tough economic times,” Mr Wilson said.
“Queensland is not alone, nor immune.
“While the mining industry around the world is facing unprecedented challenges and opportunities, one thing is clear: Queensland’s mining industry is robust and resilient with a strong, long-term future.
“The Bligh Government is acutely aware of the challenges ahead and we will work in partnership with major mining companies and unions.
“Mining is important to Queensland. It's the key economic driver of the state's strong economy and we owe a great deal of gratitude to the men and women who work in our mines.”
Mr Wilson said there are around 37,000 workers directly employed in Queensland's mining industry.
“We are acutely aware of the need to protect their jobs and job security,” Mr Wilson said.
“We will face the challenges together.”
