The Honourable Kerry Shine

Attorney-General and Minister for Justice Kerry Shine has encouraged people to have their say about how costs are shared between owners in community title arrangements in Queensland.

“With more than 330,000 owners of residences and businesses in community titles schemes, it is important for people to have their say about how the current system is working and options for reform,” Mr Shine said.

“The Department of Justice and Attorney-General has today released a discussion paper on the current laws governing how body corporate expenses are shared between owners in community titles schemes.

“Queensland’s community title laws must provide a fair and appropriate way to share costs between owners in community titles.

“These laws are important because they underpin the growth of a strong and diverse community titles sector and ensure a harmonious environment for owners.”

Mr Shine said community titles schemes covered residences and businesses such as high rise apartments, villas, townhouses or commercial premises.

“Bodies corporate incur a range of expenses in managing common property and body corporate assets,” he said.

“This discussion paper has been released to encourage public discussion and comment about how the system for sharing expenses between owners is operating under the Body Corporate and Community Management Act 1997.

“The discussion paper also provides background on the current system and why it was introduced.

“There are about 338,000 owners in community titles schemes who are directly affected by these laws.

“Queensland’s population is growing and we expect more and more people will be living and working in this kind of accommodation in the future,” Mr Shine said.

“We are interested to hear the community’s ideas and opinions.”

The discussion paper ‘Sharing Expenses in Community Titles Schemes’ will be available from the Department of Justice and Attorney-General website at www.justice.qld.gov.au or by telephoning 1800 060 119.

The closing date for submissions is 28 February 2009.
