Minister for Transport, Trade, Employment and Industrial Relations
The Honourable John Mickel

Arrangements as usual for Anzac Day falling on a Saturday in 2009

The usual retail trading restrictions will apply for Anzac Day 2009, which falls on a Saturday, and, in keeping with tradition, there will be no public holiday on the following Monday.

Employment and Industrial Relations Minister John Mickel reminded businesses and Queenslanders of the restrictions and that the solemn and iconic nature of Anzac Day meant that commemorations were always held on the day itself - April 25.

“I am writing to employer and employee groups and community organisations to advise them that when Anzac Day falls on a Saturday the tradition of observing the public holiday on the day itself – without a public holiday the following week – will continue in 2009,” Mr Mickel said.

“Non exempt shops such as the large supermarkets will be closed for the day but smaller exempt shops such as bakeries and newsagents and independent retail shops that predominantly sell food or groceries can open all day.

“Other independent retail shops (with up to 20 staff engaged at any one time in the shop) can open from 1pm and cinemas and other places of public entertainment can open from 1.30 pm, unless they have a permit to open before that time.”
