The Honourable Rod Welford

Something for everyone at the Cultural Centre this summer

Arts Minister Rod Welford today welcomed a third edition of the popular Cultural Centre booklet featuring the world-class arts and entertainment on offer over summer.

Mr Welford said Cultural Centre Summer at South Bank showcases the precinct’s unique performance, exhibition, shopping and dining experiences.

“The pocket-sized booklet and online component is a comprehensive guide to all the activities and is an essential companion for locals and visitors alike,” Mr Welford said.

“The Cultural Centre had more than 3.7 million visits in the past year and a 35 per cent increase in ticket sales at the Queensland Performing Arts Centre.

“People from around Australia and Queensland are drawn to the precinct, with exclusive exhibitions such as Picasso and his Collection, imaginative children’s programming, internationally acclaimed performers and access to the state’s best heritage and learning facilities.

“Boasting the Gallery of Modern Art (GoMA), the State Library of Queensland, the Queensland Art Gallery, Queensland Museum South Bank and the Queensland Performing Arts Centre (QPAC), the Cultural Centre caters for every interest.”

Summer highlights at the Cultural Centre include Game On, an action-packed, interactive exhibition of the history of video games at the State Library of Queensland.

GoMA is hosting the first exhibition in an ambitious new triennial series of contemporary Australian art, Contemporary Australia: Optimism.

Queensland Museum South Bank reflects on the people and events that have shaped our state with Queensland Stories: People Places Past Present and QPAC will host the Queensland Ballet’s Swan Lake and the high-energy Candy Man.

“As well as information on key activities at South Bank parklands over summer, the booklet contains information on many exciting activities in the year ahead,” Mr Welford said.

“There’s a lot to look forward to in 2009, including the Ideas Festival (24-29 March); Chicago and the Paris Opera Ballet in the refurbished QPAC; and American Impressionism and Realism: A landmark exhibition from the Met at the Queensland Art Gallery.”
