School is out tomorrow (December 12) for more than 384,000 Queensland state school students from Prep to Year 9 who will begin their summer holidays.

Education and Training Minister Rod Welford said they were the last of more than
480,000 state school students to end the school year and start their annual Christmas break.

“Year 12 students finished on 21 November, Year 10 and 11 students on 28 November, and Prep to Year 9 students at schools in western Queensland ended their school year last week,” Mr Welford said.

“I would like to wish all our students a safe and happy holiday and thank teachers and school staff for contributing to a productive and successful school year.”

Mr Welford said more than 38,000 state Prep students would finish their first year of full-time school tomorrow.

“2008 has been a significant year for education in Queensland, with the first full intake of Prep students finishing this important first year of schooling in Queensland,” he said.

“The Bligh Government recognises the importance of a solid foundation for students, and that’s why we are investing in early education.

“As part of our Toward Q2 vision we want all Queensland children to have access to quality kindergarten programs so we are rolling out 240 kindergartens throughout the state by 2014.”

Mr Welford said initiatives to improve literacy and numeracy and programs to improve student behaviour and school attendance were also key achievements in 2008.

“Research shows quality teaching makes the biggest difference to student outcomes,” he said.

“That’s why we’re investing $18 million in 2008/09 in professional development for teachers.

“The Believe, Achieve, Succeed initiative will continue supporting teachers and helping students struggling in the classroom, while the Every Day Counts campaign is a reminder that attending school every day is critically linked with educational achievement.”

Tackling obesity and encouraging students to adopt healthy habits was also a feature of 2008.

“I declared 2008 the Year of Physical Activity and I’m pleased to say around half a million students were successfully encouraged to better exercise their bodies, as well as their brains.

“I look forward to 2009, the Year of Creativity, and wish everyone a safe and happy holiday.”

State school students return to school on Tuesday 27 January 2009. State school teachers will take part in professional development activities on 22 and 23 January 2009.
