The Honourable Kerry Shine
New Public Trustee appointed
Attorney-General and Minister for Justice Kerry Shine has today announced the appointment of Queensland’s new Public Trustee.
Mr Shine said Mr Peter Carne – a stalwart Queensland legal figure for the past three decades – had been appointed to the role, overseeing the office of the Public Trustee which is the largest in the country.
“Mr Carne brings vast legal experience to the role having worked in law in Queensland for almost 30 years,” Mr Shine said.
“As well as working in his own private legal practice for many years, he has acted in several public roles, including his current position as the Chief Executive Officer of the Queensland Law Society for the past three years.
“He will continue this service to Queensland and I welcome the impressive experience and the leadership and character he will bring to his new role.”
Mr Shine said Mr Carne’s career also included his current role as the director of the College of Law Queensland.
He was formerly a director of the Tarong Energy Corporation and, between 1994 and 1997, was Commissioner of the Queensland Legal Aid Commission.
Mr Carne has also held a host of honorary positions, including Chairman of the Queensland Law Society Specialist Accreditation Board, President of the Queensland Law Society and Director of the Queensland Law Foundation.
The Public Trustee of Queensland was established in 1915 and is now the largest Public Trustee in Australia as well as the largest trust organisation in Queensland.
The Public Trustee has 15 regional offices throughout the state providing economical and accessible financial, trustee, legal and associated services.
The organisation was established to act as administrator of deceased estates, providing financial management for people with a disability and giving aid in any legal proceedings by or against a disadvantaged person.
Its services have expanded to include obtaining probate for private executors, investments, the auctioning of motor vehicles, property and other assets.
Mr Carne will take up the position in March.
