New Judge appointed to Court of Appeal

Attorney-General and Minister for Justice Kerry Shine today announced the appointment of the Honourable Justice Richard Chesterman to the bench of the Appeal Division of the Supreme Court of Queensland.

“Executive Council today approved Justice Chesterman’s appointment to the Court of Appeal effective from today (December 11),” Mr Shine said.

"Justice Chesterman is a highly-regarded Member of the bench of the trial division of the Supreme Court.

“He will bring a wealth of legal learning and experience to his new role on the Court of Appeal.”

Mr Shine said Justice Chesterman was admitted as a barrister in 1968, having completed a Bachelor of Law and Bachelor of Arts at the University of Queensland.

He had served as Associate to the Honourable Justice Charles Wanstall for two years prior to his admission.

Before joining the Supreme Court of Queensland bench in 1998, he practised in Queensland from 1970 to 1998 and in recognition of his skills and learning, was appointed Queen’s Counsel in 1982.

He was a Legal Officer with the RAAF Reserve, reaching rank of Squadron Leader. He was honoured in 1978 with the Reserve Force Decoration.

“Justice Chesterman has also lent his not inconsiderable management skills to a number of Queensland charitable organizations, including a role as Chair of the Queensland Cancer Fund and also as a member of the Queensland Art Gallery Foundation,” Mr Shine said.

"I congratulate Justice Chesterman on his elevation and the attributes which have led to his recognition as a fine Judge of the Supreme Court will be a welcomed by his colleagues on the Court of Appeal”.
