The Honourable Neil Roberts

Glasshouse Rural Fire Brigade Turns 60

State Member for Glasshouse, Carolyn Male MP, today congratulated the Glasshouse Mountains Rural Fire Service (RFS) at celebrations held at their headquarters recognising their 60 years of service to the community.

“These celebrations are extra special as Glasshouse Mountains RFS was the first Rural Fire Service in the State which was formed in December 1948,” she said.

Volunteers of Rural Fire Brigades throughout Queensland will be blowing out 60 candles on their birthday cake this week.

“The service has come a long way in 60 years. Volunteers used fire beaters and heavy metal knapsacks to fight fires,” she said.

The Glasshouse Mountain RFS will also receive a special birthday present – a $68,000 Nissan Patrol 4x4 Light Attack response vehicle.

“This appliance was partially subsidised by the State Government, and will help our volunteers carry out their vital work,” she said.

Emergency Services Minister Neil Roberts thanked all the hardworking volunteers in the RFS.

“Today there are some 34,600 volunteers in over 1,500 brigades with a
budget of $28.2 million,” Minister Roberts said.

“They provide an essential service to the community, and deserve our utmost appreciation,” he said.

The celebrations are set to continue across the state, with the launch of the 2009 Rural Fire Calendar.

“This year’s calendar focuses on family groups in the RFS, looking back on the past 60 years,” he said.

“The photos in the calendar date from the 1940s and each month bring us closer to today, with the main picture on each page being a family group from a brigade,” he said.

There are 6 other RFS celebrating their 60th anniversary. These are Byfields, Gordonbrook, Lagoon Pocket, Kandanga, Lanshaw and Thangool.
