Minister for Tourism, Regional Development and Industry
The Honourable Desley Boyle
Twenty Queensland tourism operators will bring a taste of Queensland sunshine to the wintry United Kingdom, Ireland and Nordic shores this week as part of a major trade mission designed to boost overseas visitor numbers for the state, Tourism Minister Desley Boyle said today.
Ms Boyle said Tourism Queensland’s Queensland on Tour would bring the tourism operators together with more than 300 travel agents, wholesalers, booking staff, product managers and journalists from across the UK and Scandinavia.
“The group arrived in Copenhagen on 4 December where they took part in workshop events in Copenhagen, and Dublin,” Ms Boyle said.
“The roadshow which finishes on 12 December, also includes a series of media luncheons and presentations in Helsinki, Glasgow, London and Manchester where the group will receive an update on the current situation of the UK’s tourism industry.”
Ms Boyle said the roadshow would increase exposure and awareness of Queensland destinations and help Queensland’s tourism operators build their contacts in the UK and Scandinavian travel industry.
“The 20 participating tourism operators are predominantly from Cairns, the Whitsundays and southern Queensland so the roadshow has been designed to spotlight each of these regions.
“Specific Queensland marketing campaigns will also be discussed at the workshops including the Great Sunshine Way campaign for south-east Queensland.
“The Great Sunshine Way is a magnificent drive that takes you out to Stanthorpe, Dalby, the South Burnett, across to Hervey Bay and Fraser Coast and then down the coastline through the Sunshine and Gold Coasts.”
Ms Boyle said in the year ending June 2008 Queensland welcomed 256,000 visitors from the United Kingdom and 41,000 visitors from Scandinavia, who collectively contributed $572 million to the state's economy.
“Visitors from Scandinavia and the UK love our natural environment and beach lifestyle and often engage in adventure sports and activities,” she said.
*Queensland tourism businesses, regional and local tourist organisations who are taking part in this trade mission include DescaradA Charters, Australian Tall Ship Cruises & Southern Cross Sailing, Cruise Whitsundays, Fraser Coast Tourism, Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary, Coral Sea Resort, Angsana Resort & Spa, Brisbane Marketing, Tourism Tropical North Queensland, Port Douglas Daintree Tourism, Kingfisher Bay Resort, Kewarra Beach Resort & Double Island, Cairns Skyrail, Tourism Sunshine Coast, Tourism Noosa, The Fraser Island Co, The CAPTA Group, Daydream Island Resort & Spa, The Oaks Hotels & Resorts and Cairns Tropical Zoo.
