$100,000 boost for support services: Minister

Communities and Seniors Minister Lindy Nelson-Carr has today announced $100,000 in funding for an Older Men in Rural and Remote Areas Suicide Prevention program.

The program, delivered by the Council on the Ageing, would support older men living in the Fitzroy/Central West Queensland areas.

In Gladstone yesterday as part of the Bligh Governments 12th Community Cabinet meeting, Ms Nelson-Carr said the program would importantly help reduce the incidence of self harm.

“It’s a sad fact older men are at a higher risk of becoming disconnected from their communities, especially if they live in rural and remote areas,” she said.

“Support for an individual’s social and emotional wellbeing is an important factor in helping them adjust to significant life changes, at all ages.

“This project will help older men in the Fitzroy/Central West Queensland areas improve their mental and emotional wellbeing through a peer support and education program.”

The Council on the Ageing Queensland will receive $100,000 under the Department of Communities’ Suicide Prevention Strategy to deliver the Older Men in Rural and Remote Areas Suicide Prevention initiative.

“This is the Bligh Government taking action to build safer, caring communities and support Queenslanders in need,” the Minister said.

“The project will help older men in this region link in with local health services to address any concerns or problems early on and improve their well-being.”

The Bligh Government’s Suicide Prevention Strategy adopts a whole-of-life prevention framework, with a particular focus on groups known to be at higher risk including Indigenous people, young people, seniors and marginalised groups.
