The Honourable Rod Welford
Queensland Theatre Company's education program travels north
Arts Minister Rod Welford today announced Queensland Theatre Company’s 2009 education program will tour to regional centres for the first time.
Mr Welford said Queensland Theatre Company’s innovative workshop series for students and teachers would be presented in Gladstone, Bundaberg, Rockhampton, Mackay, Townsville, Cairns and Weipa from February to August next year.
“Queensland Theatre Company plays an important role in developing the state’s artistic culture,” Mr Welford said.
“The work the company does onstage and in classrooms, lays the foundations for a creative future and educates our children on the role of creativity in our everyday lives.
“I have declared 2009 as the Year of Creativity in Queensland schools and I believe the Queensland Theatre Company’s regional education program will offer new and exciting opportunities for students and teachers to develop their creative skills.
“As well as the expansion of its education program in 2009 the Company also has two new scholarships for its annual Theatre Residency Week – a Regional Program Scholarship for a Year 12 student living in Mackay or further north and an Artistic Director’s Indigenous Scholarship for a student living in Queensland.”
Mr Welford said Queensland Theatre Company’s 2009 Season of Education Performances include: Maxine Mellor’s Mystery Project, 11–25 April; Bertolt Brecht’s The Exception and The Rule, 13–22 May; and David Brown’s Eating Ice Cream With Your Eyes Closed, 29 July – 7 August.
“These three performances encompass a classic from Brecht, an edgy modern Australian work and a mystery project from an emerging Queensland playwright, while the workshops will examine Shakespeare, clowning, physical theatre and playwriting,” he said.
“Teachers will be able to develop their skills through workshops on theatre design, puppetry on a shoestring and primary school drama, while in regional Queensland teachers will take part in an intensive three-and-a-half hour course to hone their directing skills.”
The company will also continue its popular In-School Workshops and Artists in Schools program, along with its Young Playwrights Program and Theatre Residency Week in 2009. For all school bookings contact QTIX Groups on 3840 7127.
