Sea Swift barge service

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Partnerships Minister Lindy Nelson-Carr has announced the SeaSwift weekly barge service to Lockhart River will start this week and continue through the wet season.

“The Department of Communities has finalised business arrangements with SeaSwift to reinstate the weekly barge service for the duration of the wet season,” she said.

“The service will start this week and I understand the barge is being loaded today.

“On Tuesday (December 2), the road transport vehicle was unable to access the community because of deteriorating road conditions following rain.

“In response, a delivery of perishable items was made by air yesterday (December 3), including fresh fruit, vegetables and dairy products.

“The Retail Store has been pre-stocked with supplies of non-perishable goods.

“Restarting the barge service this week will give the people of Lockhart River peace of mind.

“Goods must get through, and my department will continue to work with the people of Lockhart River to ensure they have access to essential supplies.”
