The Honourable Judy Spence

Gabba Neighbourhood Police Beat Officially Opened

Police Minister Judy Spence today officially opened the new $465,000 Gabba Neighbourhood Police Beat.

Ms Spence said: “Woolloongabba is a dynamic part of Brisbane and the new police beat highlights the Bligh Government’s commitment to matching community growth with first-rate policing services.”

“The station is a massive asset to the community – not only does it enable police to better respond to community needs, it also enables police and community to build real partnerships that help address the root causes of crime.

“The close proximity to one of Queensland’s most famous sporting venues, coupled with a unique mix of residential property, commercial space, transport infrastructure and a burgeoning restaurant precinct creates unique challenges for police.”

Ms Spence said that this year’s Queensland Police Service Budget of almost $1.6 billion is the biggest ever.

“The Bligh Government is committed to supporting safe and caring communities in Queensland. Our commitment to ensuring policing infrastructure keeps pace with community growth is indicative of this,” Ms Spence said.

“There are more than 30 major police capital works projects currently underway across Queensland. These will help to provide the facilities and services police and communities need as we move Toward Q2 – Tomorrow’s Queensland.”

Police Commissioner Bob Atkinson said: “Neighbourhood police beats have been well accepted in many communities throughout Queensland and I believe the Woolloongabba area will be no exception.

“Police beats represent a return to the traditional values of community-based policing, where the officer lives locally, becoming part of the community and working with the community to improve its safety and security.

“Police beat officers work hard to build relationships with local schools, businesses and residents, encouraging them to be more proactive in their approach to keeping themselves and their properties and possessions safe and secure.”
