State provides $30,000 to ensure Fraser Coast’s water quality

The Queensland Government has provided almost $30,000 in subsidies to the Fraser Coast Regional Council to boost water quality in the region.

Local Government Minister Warren Pitt said an additional $2126 had been provided to the council for installing inlet screens on the Howard wastewater treatment plant, bringing the total subsidy to $29,726.

Mr Pitt said the project would help improve waste water treatment and protect the Fraser Coast environment.

“These screens are a vital phase in ensuring that waste water is properly treated,” Mr Pitt said.

“Inlet screens remove the bulk of non-biodegradable matter from the waste water, protecting the treatment equipment from damage.”

Member for Hervey Bay Andrew McNamara said the screens would ensure the Fraser Coast Regional Council achieved the highest level of efficiency from the asset.

“This subsidy is just one of a series of wastewater treatment plant funding programs on the Fraser Coast,” Mr McNamara said.

“Other wastewater treatment plants to be subsidised include Torbanlea, Burrum, Pulgul and Toogoom.

“This funding will mean lower operating costs for the ratepayers of the Fraser Coast, and better outcomes for Queensland’s natural environment,” Mr McNamara said.

Mr McNamara said the funding had been provided through the State Government’s Water and Sewerage Program, which provides local governments with subsidies of up to 50 per cent of the cost of essential water and sewerage infrastructure.
