Minister for Emergency Services
The Honourable Neil Roberts
Preparing Homes for Storms
Homeowners are being urged to storm safe their homes before more predicted severe weather lashes the state.
Minister for Emergency Services made the plea in State Parliament today.
“Early preparation is a key element in any strategy to manage storm damage,” Minister Roberts said.
“The Government has been distributing information to help residents, including the ‘Preparing for Cyclones’ booklet,” he said.
“This information is online and available in five languages other than English, while Emergency Management Queensland offices in all coastal, cyclone-prone areas can provide advice.”
The booklet urge homeowners to trim trees, remove overhanging branches, clear gutters and downpipes, and secure any loose roof tiles or sheets, to avoid them turning into dangerous missiles in high winds.
While residents look after their homes, local and state authorities are also doing their bit to prepare. Storm Disaster workshops are being held in high risk areas all over the state, to update Local Disaster Management Groups on storm forecasts.
“The State Disaster Coordination centre has recently instituted a 24/7 watch desk system,” Minister Roberts said.
“This permanent presence will give emergency first responders, such as councils, SES and fire officers a fixed point of contact for operational issues and requests for logistics and information.”
Residents are encouraged to contact the State Emergency Service on 132 500 for assistance during the storm season.
