Minister for Sustainability, Climate Change and Innovation
The Honourable Andrew McNamara

Wide Bay residents invited to join the battle to beat climate change

Wide Bay householders and business owners are being invited to join the battle to beat climate change.

Sustainability, Climate Change and Innovation Minister, Andrew McNamara, has announced a Climate Change Forum will be held at Hervey Bay Golf and Country Club on Friday 12 December.

"Climate change is the single biggest environmental threat facing the world today," Mr McNamara said.

"It is a world wide issue, but we all contribute to the problem and we can all contribute to the solution.

"The purpose of the forum is to give Wide Bay residents a greater understanding of what causes climate change, to see what is being done by the State and Federal governments, and what we as individuals can do to minimise our impact.

"Climate change is caused by too many greenhouse gases, particularly carbon dioxide (CO2), being released into the atmosphere.

"Australia has one of the highest per capita CO2 emissions in the world, and Queensland's CO2 emissions are the highest in Australia.

"Our largest sources of emissions are from energy, deforestation and agriculture, but we all contribute when we drive a car, take a shower, make a cup of tea, cook a meal, watch the TV or listen to a CD, by using energy that releases CO2.

"At the forum householders can commit to reducing their carbon footprint by taking part in the Low Carbon Diet which not only costs you nothing, it will save you money on your electricity and water bills.

"You can also find out how to sign up for the ClimateSmart Home Service. For a cost of $50, a qualified trade person will conduct a home energy audit and install a household energy monitoring device, 15 compact fluorescent light bulbs and a water efficient shower rose.

"At the forum, business owners can find out how to become an ecoBiz partner, a member of QWESTNet (Queensland Water and Energy Sustainable Technologies Network) which connects Queensland businesses with sustainable technologies, and how to participate in ClimateSmart Retail program.

"By taking part in these programs, you will save money, save energy and save the planet," Mr McNamara said.

The Climate Change Forum will be held at Hervey bay Golf and Country Club, at the corner of Tooth Street and Old Maryborough Road, Pialba on Friday 12 December from 10am to 12 noon.

As the number of participants will be limited by the size of the function room, people interested in attending the forum can register online at www.climatesmart.qld.gov.au/widebay or call 1300 130372 - select option 8.
