DON’T ROCK THE BOAT THIS SUMMER

Transport Minister John Mickel is urging boaties not to make waves and ensure this summer is smooth sailing for all.

With the summer holidays bringing an increase in the number of boaters, skiers, surfers and swimmers, Mr Mickel urged everyone to try to get along.

"This is particularly important in South East Queensland - with more than half of the state's 225,000 recreational vessels to be found in Brisbane and the Gold Coast,” he said.

"Almost one in every 15 Queenslanders aged 16 years or older now owns a boat. But the ocean and rivers haven’t gotten any larger so it’s vital everyone respects one another.”

Statistics from Maritime Safety Queensland show with the increase in boating, there has also been an increase in reported marine incidents, with 766 incidents reported in Queensland in 2007.

This represented an increase of eight per cent from 2006.

There have been 628 reported marine incidents to the end of October 2008.

"Fortunately Queensland’s overall marine fatality toll dropped in 2007 to 13 deaths, compared with 17 in 2006,” Mr Mickel said.

The MSQ statistics showed sixty per cent of all marine incidents were due to inattention, human navigation or operation error, or failure to keep a proper lookout.

Most marine infringement notices were issued for speeding or inadequate safety equipment.

Mr Mickel revealed this year's safe boating theme is being a courteous skipper.

"The skipper is in charge of the safety of the boat and everyone onboard,” he said.

"Skippers should be aware of their responsibilities and observe the rules and regulations – especially with regard to drinking alcohol.

"The effects of alcohol are enhanced while on the water due to the sun, waves and constant motion.

“Reflexes and response times to emergencies are slowed and swimming ability deteriorates considerably."

Mr Mickel said the skipper must have a blood alcohol limit of less than 0.05, the same rules as on the road.
