Minister for Emergency Services
The Honourable Neil Roberts

Crackdown on prank callers to Ambos and Firies

Pranksters who falsely call emergency services could face hefty fines and penalties, after amendments to the Ambulance Service and the Fire and Rescue Service acts were passed in parliament this week.

Emergency Services Minister Neil Roberts said firies and ambos have had thousands of false calls to triple 0, which diverts valuable resources from real emergencies.

“It’s a waste of precious time and resources, and is frustrating for our hardworking emergency crews”, he said.

“This isn’t about punishing people who make genuine or mistaken calls. Only false and malicious callers should be worried.”

Powers to investigate false calls will be delegated to designated emergency services personnel.

“Front line firies and ambos will continue delivering front line services”, Minister Roberts said.

The legislation also enables the QAS to refer patients to alternative health services in cases where they do not require ambulance transport. This could include a GP or 13HEALTH.

“This initiative is aimed at reducing the need for patients to be transported to emergency departments, when some other form of treatment would be more appropriate”, Minister Roberts said.

In order to enhance patient care, the legislation also enables appropriate information sharing between relevant authorities on the health status of a patient.

Paramedics will be able to provide police, health workers and carers who have an interest in the wellbeing of the patient, information on the patient, to ensure the best possible care.

The legislation also clarifies that the QAS can provide community education functions, to the extent that it does not detract from front line service delivery.

The QAS will continue to offer a comprehensive range of first aid training and a baby capsule hire service to the community.

The legislation also creates a new Emergency Services Advisory Council, which incorporates the functions of the pre-existing Rural Fire Advisory.
