Minister for Police, Corrective Services and Sport
The Honourable Judy Spence
Spence opens new multi-million dollar tennis facility on Brisbane Northside
Northside residents now have access to a first-rate tennis facility, following the official opening today of the Shaw Park Estate Tennis Centre.
Sport Minister Judy Spence said the new $2.79 million tennis facility at Wavell Heights will boost opportunities for members of the community to get involved in physical activity.
“The Bligh Government is committed to making Queenslanders Australia’s healthiest people, by improving sport and recreation opportunities for people across the state,” Ms Spence said.
“We are pleased to have provided more than $1.13 million toward the project, contributing to the construction of ten new synthetic hard courts, a clubhouse, change rooms, kiosk and a retail outlet for the local community.
“I congratulate the Brisbane City Council on their contribution to the project, providing the remaining $1.66 million.
“This project is an excellent example of state and local governments working together to deliver quality facilities for our community.
“The new facility caters to everyone from junior to senior players, hosting a wide range of coaching clinics, fixtures and social competitions.
“The tennis centre will significantly boost opportunities for members of the community to be involved in physical activity, which is essential to help tackle the rising obesity levels.”
Ms Spence said it is an exciting time for tennis in this state, with the new Queensland Tennis Centre set to open in January.
“The Bligh Government is pleased to have invested $82 million to build the new world-class Queensland Tennis Centre at Tennyson, which will host the inaugural Brisbane International tournament from 4-11 January next year.
“The Brisbane International will attract some of the world’s best stars to the Centre’s 5,500 seat main arena – and showcase this state’s excellent sporting facilities to the world.
“And with almost 20,000 registered tennis club members playing the sport across the state, the future for tennis in Queensland is looking very bright.
“Since January 2007 alone, we have provided more than $10.2 million for tennis related projects throughout Queensland, from the grass roots level to the elite.
“The Bligh Government will continue to support the sport of tennis as its popularity grows, so that more people can enjoy the benefits of an active and healthy lifestyle.
“By providing Queenslander’s with access to first-class sporting facilities like this in their local communities, we are making it easier for people to get involved in sport and recreation – ensuring that Tomorrow’s Queensland is a healthier one.”
