Minister for Emergency Services
The Honourable Neil Roberts

With only two weeks to go until Brisbane City Council Opposition Leader Shayne Sutton gives birth, she said Queensland Ambulance Service’s baby capsule fitting service has given her real peace of mind.

Today Queensland Ambulance Service workers professionally fitted a protective baby capsule in the back of her car.

Councillor Sutton encouraged more parents to install the potentially lifesaving devices in their vehicles, through the QAS Baby Capsule Hire Service.

“Knowing that my new baby will travel safely in a professionally fitted capsule is a huge comfort,” she said.

“This service will provide real peace of mind whenever my husband and I are travelling with our baby.”

Emergency Services Minister Neil Roberts said the QAS had been running the baby capsule hire service since 1993, as a part of the community safety program.

“The average period of time of a hire is 6 months. Babies grow at varying rates – so when a baby reaches a weight of 9 kilograms or a length of 700mm, the baby capsule is no longer the correct restraint”, he said.

Member for Brisbane Central Grace Grace said capsules can also be hired on a short term basis, to cater for interstate tourists, however this is not common as car hire companies can include a capsule hire in their hire costs.

“The cost of a capsule hire is very affordable. It’s $68.10and covers the hire and specialised fitting for 6 months and all capsule accessories, such as longer straps”, she said.

People can contact the Smart Services Queensland Call Centre on 1300 369 003 to make an appointment to hire and have the capsule fitted.
