The Honourable Rod Welford
Queensland’s brightest aerospace students reached new heights today at the Aerospace Education Awards ceremony in Brisbane.
Education and Training Minister Rod Welford congratulated the 11 winners and 24 finalists from Queensland’s 17 Aerospace Project schools for their achievements over the 2008 academic year.
“Today we recognised students for outstanding accomplishments in academic performance, leadership and innovation in aviation education,” Mr Welford said.
“Three students won aeroskills scholarships to cover the costs of 12 months’ formal training including the theory and practical components of a Certificate IV in Aeroskills.
“One deserving teacher won the Boeing Education Excellence Scholarship, which includes a study tour of the Boeing factories in Seattle in the United States and a place at Space Camp at the US Space and Rocket Centre.”
Mr Welford said the Aerospace Project was about creating study and career pathways for Queensland students in this exciting industry.
“Queensland has 984 aviation and aerospace companies and the industry employs more than 17,000 people across Queensland,” he said.
“The Bligh Government is investing in the future of Queensland by ensuring our children have the diverse skills they need to move into dynamic industries like this one. By investing in these projects and working in partnership with industry we’re moving our state Toward Q2, Tomorrow’s Queensland.”
Mr Welford said since 2004 the Aerospace Project had expanded from six schools in southeast Queensland to 17 schools across the state.
“Around 700 Year 10, 11 and 12 students are now studying aerospace subjects because of this project and 18 students from Aerospace Project schools have gained direct entry to tertiary programs at University of Queensland, QUT and Griffith University for next year,” he said.
Boeing Defence Australia Director Human Resources Geoff Woodcroft said these awards were a way for Boeing and other industry partners to foster the next generation of aerospace employees.
“The awards recognise students who possess the values, skills and abilities we value so highly in our industry and the teachers who support them to achieve their goals,” Mr Woodcroft said.
The Department of Education, Training and the Arts partners in the Aerospace Project are Boeing Defence Australia, Aviation Australia, the Brisbane Airport Corporation, Australian Aerospace and GE Aviation.
The 17 state and non-state Aerospace Project Schools are located in Brisbane, Ipswich, Townsville, Mount Isa, Toowoomba, Oakey, Mackay, Gold Coast, Cairns and Caloundra. The schools offer specialist Aerospace Studies and Aeroskills Studies courses.
