The Honourable Desley Boyle
Tropical North Tourism operators take Queensland on European Tour
Tropical North Queensland’s tourism operators will be spearheading the State’s promotional pitch to Europe later this month as part of a major trade mission designed to boost overseas visitor numbers, Tourism Minister Desley Boyle said.
Ms Boyle said Tourism Queensland's fifth annual Queensland on Tour would bring nine Tropical North Queensland tourism operators – plus representation from TTNQ - together with more than 300 European travel agents, wholesalers, booking staff, product managers and journalists.
"The Queensland on Tour group will kick off in Frankfurt, Germany this week with a series of workshop events and will then spend the next nine days meeting with travel trade partners in Amsterdam, Paris, Zurich, Munich and Milan,” Ms Boyle said.
"A number will also continue on to take part in Queensland on Tour through the UK and Scandinavia from 4 December."
Ms Boyle said the European markets were some of the most important for Tropical North Queensland.
“In year ending June 2008 181,000 Europeans visited Tropical North Queensland,” she said.
“Europeans love Queensland’s natural environment and Tropical North Queensland is perfectly placed to capitalise on this with some of the world’s most beautiful natural attractions spanning from the World Heritage listed rainforest national parks to the Great Barrier Reef.
“Queensland on Tour Europe will also help keep North Queensland’s tropical climate front of mind, an attractive prospect to Europeans when they’re in the grips of a European winter.”
Tourism Tropical North Queensland Chief Executive Officer Rob Giason said visitation to Tropical North Queensland from Germany, Netherlands, France, and the Scandinavian counties had been strong.
“In the current economic climate we need to increase awareness of our destination and tourism experiences to keep these markets performing,’ Mr Gaison said.
“The UK remains our most valuable overseas market in terms of overall spend, and we intend to fight harder than ever for every last visitor.
“This sales mission underlines our commitment to preserving TNQ’s share of these lucrative markets,” he said.
The 10 participants from the Tropical North include Tourism Tropical North Queensland, Port Douglas Peninsula Boutique Hotel, Skyrail Rainforest Cableway, Ocean Spirit Cruises, Quicksilver Connections, Hotel Cairns, Descarada Charters, Kewarra Beach Resort, Pacific International Hotel and Prodive.
Ms Boyle said the roadshow would increase the European travel industry's awareness of Tropical North Queensland destinations and raise the profile of the destination’s tourism product suppliers.
“As well as campaign initiatives for the seven regions across Queensland, the workshops will feature presentations by special guest, world-renowned photographer Peter Meyer.”
Ms Boyle also thanked Queensland on Tour Europe’s airline partners Etihad Airways, Qantas and Singapore Airlines.
