Minister announces speed reduction for Moggill Rd at Bellbowrie

The speed limit on Moggill Road through Bellbowrie will be reduced to 60km/h this week, Main Roads Minister Warren Pitt announced today.

Mr Pitt said a recent speed review of the stretch between Sugars Road and Pinkwood Street had found that the existing 70km/h limit was appropriate to the road environment.

However, significant community concern had played a role in his decision to reduce the speed limit.

"I thank Main Roads staff for the conscientious manner in which they undertook the most recent speed review,” Mr Pitt said.

“Technical analysis showed that a 70km/h speed limit was consistent with, and safe for, the road environment along this stretch of Moggill Road. This finding was consistent with previous speed reviews in 2005 and 2007.

"That said, I am determined as Main Roads Minister to ensure that we are responsive to community needs.

"In this case, the strong wish of the local community is to have the speed limit along Moggill Road lowered through Bellbowrie.

"As a result, I have instructed Main Roads to reduce the speed limit between Sugars Road and Pinkwood Street to 60km/h.

“This new speed zone should be in place by the end of the week once new signs are installed."

Mr Pitt said Main Roads had also undertaken a review of Moggill Road between Mount Crosby Road and Sugars Road and had recommended a reduction in speed limit from 80km/h to 70km/h.

This reduction was fully endorsed by a speed management review committee, consisting of representatives from Main Roads, Queensland Transport, police and the council.

"This reduced speed limit will improve safety," Mr Pitt said.

"In conjunction with the reduction through Bellbowrie, it will create a lower speed environment between Moggill and Pinjarra Hills."

Mr Pitt said Main Roads was committed to ensuring safety for motorists and pedestrians along Moggill Road.

"Main Roads is currently undertaking the duplication of Moggill Road from two to four lanes between Pullenvale Road and Kilkivan Avenue, which is scheduled to be completed by the end of the year," Mr Pitt said.

“The $34 million upgrade will ease congestion and includes three signalised intersections with pedestrian crossings and improved pedestrian pathways.

“Main Roads has also approved the business case to install traffic signals at the Moggill and Birkin roads intersection to improve motorist and pedestrian safety.

"The business case will now be submitted to the Safer Roads Sooner committee for funding consideration."

Mr Pitt said additional upgrade and safety improvement works were planned for Moggill Road, including investigating the installation of a new right-turn lane from Moggill Road into Witton Road, improving safety for right turning traffic.
