Minister for Tourism, Regional Development and Industry
The Honourable Desley Boyle

A $40,000 marketing campaign to encourage people to visit Townsville and Magnetic Island over the Christmas holidays will be rolled out mid-December, Tourism Minister Desley Boyle announced today.

Ms Boyle said Tourism Queensland was working with industry partners and local operators to develop a campaign to boost visitation to the region over the coming months.

“The campaign will profile package deals offered by a range of Magnetic Island operators, accommodation providers and tour companies through online and print promotions,” Ms Boyle said.

“The operators’ holiday packages will be featured on a dedicated Magnetic Island website www.magneticisland.com.au which will also be linked to the Queensland Holidays website.

"The campaign will also involve press and radio advertising, promotions and public relations activities in Queensland newspapers and magazines as well as Sydney and Melbourne publications.

“Local state MPs have discussed the current Magnetic Island situation with me and their concerns for affected business.

“Following their advice the Queensland Government has actioned this campaign.”

Ms Boyle said using the tag line of Where the attraction is Magnetic, the campaign will entice a range of different holidaymakers to visit one of the most beautiful islands on the Great Barrier Reef - Magnetic Island.

“This campaign is specifically aimed at getting Queenslanders, in particular North Queensland residents, to holiday at home this year and support local operators,” she said.

“We are also hoping to attract international backpackers and interstate holidaymakers to the region.

“Magnetic Island is one of the jewels in Queensland’s tourism crown and it is anticipated this campaign will help to bolster tourism in the region.”

Ms Boyle said tourism is and has always been a volatile industry.

“Tourism operators are encouraged to plan not only for the good times but also to develop risk management plans to ensure their resilience during the difficult times that will inevitably occur.

“I congratulate the Magnetic Island tourism operators who already have risk management plans to deal with every present weather, environmental or economic dangers.

“My department’s regional office has a range of free services to assist any local business with their planning and I encourage local representative tourism organisations to also offer free tailored assistance and proactively work with local operators to help protect their businesses.”
