The Honourable Rod Welford

Schools affected by storm damage

Parents in storm-affected areas are being urged to contact their principal or local education district office about classroom arrangements in their children’s school today.

Education and Training Minister Rod Welford said a number of schools in the south east region had suffered damage as a result of last night’s severe storms.

“At this stage at least one school is closed and one other is taking students only for emergency supervision,” Mr Welford said.

“Morayfield State High School will remain closed today due to local flooding, and danger from fallen power lines and trees.

“The safety of students and staff is the Department’s highest priority and the school has taken police advice to stay closed today while the damage is assessed.

“A decision whether to open the school tomorrow will be made following this assessment.
“Burpengary State School will be open for emergency supervision only.

“There have been reports that The Gap and Hilder Road State Schools are closed. These reports are incorrect. Both these schools are open and are taking students.”

Other state schools that received storm damage include:

Ferny Grove State High School
Samford State School
The Gap State School
The Gap State High School
Hilder Road State School
Patricks Road State School
Grovely State School
Ashgrove State School
Albany Creek State School
Tamborine Mountain State School

All of these schools will be open today.

“Q Build and State Emergency Services personnel are at these schools this morning to assess damage and conduct emergency repairs,” Mr Welford said.

“Most of the damage has occurred as a result of fallen trees and damaged roofs.

“Concerned parents should listen to local radio reports or speak to their principal or district office.”
