Minister for Tourism, Regional Development and Industry
The Honourable Desley Boyle
Cairns business to benefit from more than $1billion of major projects
Cairns businesses are being urged to attend a forum this week to help them benefit from the millions of dollars of major infrastructure projects underway in the region.
Tourism, Regional Development and Industry Minister Desley Boyle said the two-hour forum would highlight major project supply chain opportunities in the Cairns region.
“The region currently has more than $1.7 billion of active projects with $950 million in Cairns itself,” she said.
“There are some incredible opportunities out there for manufacturers and value-adding service providers and this seminar can help them to access those opportunities.”
Ms Boyle said the free forum would be held in conjunction with her department’s Cairns Centre and the Industry Capability Network (ICN) Queensland.
“ICN Network Queensland is a division of QMI Solutions which has had a long and fruitful association with the State Government,” she said.
“ICN Queensland works with government and private sector major infrastructure, industrial, energy and resource projects. Its project work also analyses engineering and procurement specificifications to provide competitive local supply options.”
Ms Boyle said the forum would feature guest speakers from ICN, Thiess, Queensland Health and Laing O’Rourke.
“Thiess has been awarded a contract to manage the $445M expansion to the Lotus Glen Correctional Centre, and Queensland Health’s Major Hospitals Project Office is managing the $446.3M upgrade of the Cairns Hospital,” she said.
“Participants will also hear from construction company Laing O’Rourke, the managers of the $79.5M William McCormack building project in Cairns, which aims to achieve the highest green rating possible.”
The Major Projects forum will be held from 7:00am – 9:00am on Friday, 21 November at the Cairns International Hotel.
To register, telephone the Cairns Centre of the Department of Tourism, Regional Development and Industry on 4048 1111 or Eddo Roggeveen on (07) 3364 0678.
