The Honourable Neil Roberts

Minister issues challenge - become an SES volunteer

Emergency Services Minister, Neil Roberts has issued a challenge to Queenslanders during National SES Week (November 8 to 16) celebrations to don the orange overalls and join one of the largest emergency service organisations in the state.

Queenslanders have been counting on SES volunteers to be there in times of disaster for more than 30 years.

With more than 340 groups around the State, the SES boasts more than 6,400 volunteer members all now sporting the internationally recognisable orange uniform.

“There is a job for everyone in SES and we need people who can take part in operational activities, as well as those willing to assist with administration, welfare or communications,” Minister Roberts said.

“You don’t need to have a high level of skill in operational areas either - SES is a training organisation and regular training will provide you with all the skills you need.

“All equipment and clothing is provided free of charge to volunteers. The only cost is a strong dose of commitment and willingness to help your community!

“It costs the Government over $1,000 to fully kit out an SES volunteer. “

Minister Roberts said the SES is a popular volunteering option because it offers practical skills training, adventure, mateship and a strong community focus.

“Volunteers may find themselves assisting police with searches for missing people, providing traffic control at major incidents or helping clean up after a severe storm or cyclone,” he said.

“When SES volunteers pull on their orange uniforms their focus is on helping others and being the best they can for their communities.

“Skills like heights training, flood boat operation and chain saw training are all practical skills which people can also use in everyday life.”

Minister Roberts said SES volunteers are encouraged to engage with their local communities and take pride in belonging to such a committed network of people.

“I would encourage anyone who is considering or who has ever thought about joining the SES to speak to their local SES unit, ring 1300 369 003 or visit www.emergency.qld.gov.au/ses,” he said.
