The Honourable Neil Roberts

SES Week - Get set for summer storms

The State Emergency Service (SES) is urging Queensland residents to ensure their homes are safe for the current storm season as part of the 2008 SES week celebrations.

Minister for Emergency Services Neil Roberts said SES Week (November 8-16) is a great time for people to ensure they are prepared.

“Many people associate SES volunteers with storms because we’re the people you see out and about helping the community clean up the damage,” the Minister said.

“While the volunteers do a great job, there are always ways residents can prepare themselves to avoid storm damage in the first place.”

Minister Roberts said a few simple steps are all it takes to protect people and property during the storm season.

“It only takes a few minutes out of the weekend to check around the home and minimise the danger to you and your family,” he said.

“A great place to start is around the garden. Clear any overhanging branches or branches in danger of breaking, as these can become air borne in strong winds.

“Make sure you can secure any loose items like outdoor furniture, gardening equipment, kids’ toys or wheelie bins quickly and safely before a storm approaches. These can become lethal missiles once the wind picks up.

"Also, clear verandahs, decks and yards of all objects that could become projectiles in high winds.

"Take an inventory of your landscaping and remove dead branches from trees. This needs to be done well before the storm hits so that the debris can be collected before it too becomes a flying hazard. Check with your local government for its collection schedule.

“If possible, move your car undercover to avoid hail damage.

“Inside the house the most important thing is to have an easily accessible emergency kit. Your kit should include a first aid kit, a portable radio, a torch and of course replacement batteries.

“It would also pay to have a list of emergency contact telephone numbers by your phone including the SES assistance number 132 500.”
