Tickets now on sale for world famous French ballet

Arts Minister Rod Welford today announced tickets were on sale for the much anticipated season of the Paris Opera Ballet at the Queensland Performing Arts Centre (QPAC) in 2009.

Mr Welford said the popular French ballet would appear exclusively in the newly-refurbished Lyric Theatre from 24 June to 4 July.

“The Paris Opera Ballet is making its only Australian appearances in Brisbane next year, with 12 performances of La Bayadere,” Mr Welford said.

“This will be the Australian premiere of the show and I expect it will be popular with audiences from Queensland and around the country.

“Quality productions in great theatres always have strong pulling power.

“Tickets for the hit musical Chicago went on sale two weeks ago and already ticket sales have reached more than $2 million.

“I am pleased both of these productions will appear in the Lyric Theatre, which is now undergoing a refurbishment along with the Concert Hall, to install new seating, lighting, acoustics and a modular stage.”

Mr Welford said the Cultural Centre promises great excitement in 2009.

“As well as the Paris Opera Ballet and Chicago showing at QPAC, a world exclusive exhibition titled, American Impressionism and Realism: A Landmark Exhibition from the Met, will appear at the Queensland Art Gallery from May to September,” he said.

The Paris Opera Ballet, one of the world’s largest and oldest ballet companies, has visited Australia only once before, performing in Sydney in 2007.

The Paris Opera Ballet’s origins date back to the 17th century under Louis XIV and it is considered one of the greatest ballet companies in the world.

La Bayadere was ballet legend Rudolf Nureyev’s last creation as the artistic director of the Paris Opera Ballet before his death in 1993.

During the QPAC refurbishment the qtix box office is re-located at the Playhouse. All Cultural Centre car parks will remain open. To book for the Paris Opera Ballet visit www.qtix.com.au
