Mulherin: New fisheries scholarship on offer

Primary Industries and Fisheries Minister Tim Mulherin says a new fisheries scholarship is available for Central Queensland University honours students.

Mr Mulherin said: “The annual $5000 Marine Fish Habitat Scholarship will be offered to CQ University Australia honours students for the first time in 2009.

“The DPI&F scholarship will provide scientific research funding in the area of marine fish habitat and is open to all honours students who commence their study in semester 1, 2009.

“The student’s research will contribute to our priority marine fish habitat projects including land use impacts, marine plant management and also the rehabilitation of fish habitats in Queensland.”

“This scholarship will also help the department establish closer links between fisheries management and honours research conducted in Central Queensland.

“This is the first time a scholarship of this kind has been offered to CQ University Australia students.

“It follows similar scholarship programs that have already been established in southern Queensland through University of Queensland and in northern Queensland through James Cook University.”

“DPI&F offers ten other scholarships ranging from programs for PhD and Masters scholars to supporting indigenous students through secondary school combined with work experience projects,” Mr Mulherin said.

CQ University Australia, Director of Development and Graduate Relations, Suzi Blair, said the scholarship was an excellent opportunity for the university and DPI&F to support higher education research.

“The scholarship is a wonderful example of how organisations partnering with the university can provide immense community benefit,” said Mrs Blair.

Applications for the Marine Fish Habitat Scholarship close Monday, 1 December 2008.
