The Honourable Judy Spence
Outdoor recreation awards recognise outstanding contributions
Leading Queensland organisations and individuals in the outdoor recreation industry will tonight be recognised at a special awards dinner to be held at the Victoria Park Golf Complex at Herston.
Member for Burleigh Christine Smith will represent Sport Minister Judy Spence at the Queensland Outdoor Recreation Federation’s (QORF) Awards, presenting the Individual Award for Outstanding Achievement.
Sport Minister Judy Spence said: “Participation in outdoor recreation in South East Queensland is estimated to be worth at least $1 billion annually to our economy.
“These awards celebrate the achievements, innovation and professionalism of the people working behind the scenes to ensure the outdoor recreation industry continues to grow.
“I congratulate all individuals and organisations nominated for their involvement in outdoor recreation in Queensland, and their substantial contributions to improving participation opportunities for Queenslanders.
“The Bligh Government is committed to supporting safe and caring communities, and making Queenslanders Australia’s healthiest people – and those involved in this industry are helping us to achieve our goals as we move Toward Q2: Tomorrow’s Queensland.
“By providing opportunities for Queenslanders to get involved in active recreation, more people are discovering the lifelong benefits of a healthy lifestyle while having fun at the same time.”
Ms Spence said the Bligh Government works closely with the QORF to promote safe and enjoyable outdoor recreation opportunities for all Queenslanders.
“We provided $720,000 to QORF under the Industry Peak Body Funding 2008-2010 to support the development of outdoor recreation activities in Queensland.
“This funding will help the sport and outdoor recreation industry to develop the skills and services needed to improve Queensland’s outdoor recreation activities and facilities.
“Together we are helping to provide better services to Queenslanders – creating a healthier state for our future.”
Member for Burleigh Christine Smith said she is pleased to be presenting the Outstanding Achievement Award tonight, recognising an individual’s commitment to getting people involved in outdoor recreation activities.
“We are lucky to have such a diversity of natural attractions here in Queensland – especially in my electorate of Burleigh – which provide opportunities for us to get out and be active.
“The Gold Coast is one of the most popular outdoor destinations in Australia, where people make the most of our excellent climate and lifestyle by enjoying outdoor activities like hiking in the Hinterland and soaking up our spectacular beaches.
“The Bligh Government is working with local governments across the state to ensure that outdoor recreation is included in future planning at a local level – to protect our lifestyle and environment for Tomorrow’s Queensland.”
