Minister for Main Roads and Local Government
The Honourable Warren Pitt
New roundabout for better traffic flow in Gracemere
The Gracemere community can look forward to improved safety and traffic flow with the construction of a new roundabout on track for completion by December.
Main Roads Minister Warren Pitt and Member for Fitzroy Jim Pearce said the $541,000 project would reduce congestion at the busy intersection of John Street, Lawrie Street and Russell Street, next to the shopping precinct.
"About 10,000 vehicles travel through this intersection daily," Mr Pitt said.
"Gracemere is a growing community and Main Roads has recognised the infrastructure needs of the town are changing.
“This project is designed to not only improve safety, waiting times and traffic efficiency, but also cater for future population growth.”
Mr Pearce said the Gracemere community supported the need to improve safety and traffic efficiency in the town.
"There has been a push by the local community to upgrade this particular intersection, as traffic around the shopping precinct can get very congested and be difficult to negotiate for both motorists and pedestrians,” he said.
"Part of this project will involve installing a pedestrian refuge on Lawrie Street between Russell Street and Platen Street.
“This will provide pedestrians with a safe place to negotiate one lane of traffic at a time when crossing the road.
“U-turns on Lawrie Street in front of the shopping precinct will also be restricted to ensure the safety of pedestrians and motorists is maintained.”
Works on the roundabout project are occurring between 6am and 7pm, Monday to Friday. Rockhampton Regional Council is undertaking the works on behalf of Main Roads.
